100 científicos hispanos / Latinx inspiradores en América entre ellos la Venezolana Valeria Vasquez

La jueza de la Corte Suprema, Sonia Sotomayor, dijo una vez: "Hasta que no logremos la igualdad en la educación, no tendremos un
sociedad igualitaria ". Aunque está dirigida a la sociedad en su conjunto, sus palabras también se aplican a nuestra sociedad científica.

Hasta que la comunidad científica no realice esfuerzos dedicados para incluir a los académicos de las minorías, la ciencia nunca será una sociedad igualitaria. Si bien la Corte Suprema dictaminó recientemente para bloquear los intentos de poner fin al programa de Acción Diferida para los Llegados en la Infancia (DACA), la lucha contra el racismo sistémico es un largo viaje que se extiende mucho más allá de este caso. Todos debemos trabajar para garantizar que los científicos de todos los ámbitos de la vida sean apoyados y recibidos en la comunidad científica a fin de construir un paisaje que represente con mayor precisión la composición de la sociedad.

En honor al Mes Nacional de la Herencia Hispana, presentamos a 100 de los científicos hispanos / latinx más inspiradores que trabajan en los Estados Unidos. Esta lista, seleccionada en función de los logros académicos, la excelencia en la tutoría y el compromiso con la diversidad, la equidad y la inclusión, representa solo un subconjunto de los modelos científicos a seguir en la comunidad. Nuestro objetivo al reunir estos nombres es poner fin al mito dañino de que no hay suficientes científicos diversos para impartir seminarios, actuar como panelistas o ocupar puestos científicos. Destacamos a los científicos que abarcan carreras dentro de la academia, el gobierno y la biotecnología, y mostramos a personas comprometidas a servir a diversas poblaciones de estudiantes en instituciones que atienden a hispanos. Aunque entendemos que esta lista no es completamente representativa de la comunidad científica hispana / latinx, esperamos que ayude a cambiar la percepción de cómo se ve un científico y haga que nuestra imagen colectiva sea más representativa de la sociedad en general.
